Then appointed as Assistant Professor Gastroenterology in VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital.

Upper GI Endoscopy
A procedure in which the doctor uses an endoscope, a flexible tube with a camera that is entered through the mouth to see the lining of your upper gastrointestinal tract ( esophagus, stomach and upper intestine i.e.duodenum) . The findings are visualised on a monitor attached to the scope. It helps in diagnosing and treating symptoms and conditions that affect the visualised areas. The procedure can also be used for obtaining biopsy sample( by passing an instrument through the scope to obtain a small piece of tissue ) for testing and also performing various therapeutic / interventional procedures to treat the conditions.
FACTS:-
- To see your upper GI tract clearly the doctor will ask you to come empty stomach ( not to eat or drink) upto 8hrs. prior to the procedure.
- A local anaesthetic gargle / spray is applied to numb your throat to prevent you from gagging.
- The endoscope does not interfere with your breathing.
- The procedure most often takes upto 15-30 min.
- The patient can resume normal diet once the swallowing returns to normal.
Lower GI endoscopy
A procedure in which the doctor uses a colonoscope, a flexible tube with a camera to see the lining of your lower gastrointestinal tract [ rectum, sigmoid, colon upto the carcum and terminal part of ileum ( small intestine) ] . The findings are visualised on a monitor attached to the scope. It helps in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect the visualised areas. It can also be used as a screening tool for early detection of colonic polyps and cancers when the doctor has better chances of managing the disease effectively.
FACTS:-
- To see the lower GI tract clearly, the doctor instructs you to have a complete bowel preparation which let’s you to pass multiple frequent stools that are clear and liquid. You are also required to take soft diet a day before the procedure.
- Intravenous anaesthetic drugs/ sedatives/ pain killers may be given ( with patient choice/ consent/ counselling )
- The procedure often takes 30-60 min.
- The scope inflates your large intestine with air for a better view- may cause bloating, distension and cramping for 1-2 hrs post procedure.
- You should expect full recovery and return to your normal diet by next day.
